What I wish I learned & a few things I'm glad I skipped!
As my oldest daughter is deep into the middle school years, it's really hitting me how fast time is going and I only have a few short years left to homeschool her (and the other girls are not far behind!) I have been reflecting the last year or two about areas I really want to focus on...areas that I either wish I had been able to learn about or areas that I did learn about but wish I would have paid more attention. I also am sharing a couple of things that I *didn't* learn that I do NOT regret!

Isaac Watts' book on Logic is meant for 9th graders, but more than 200 years ago. I believe most adults would struggle through it today. Very good challenge for high schoolers! Highly recommend for all homeschools. Also, a good introduction to Logic is the Fallacy Detective book.

Also in the camp of "I learned government/economics definitions to pass the tests & wish I'd learned something useful like budgeting, filing taxes, how to handle/improve credit scores, etc." Can definitely agree with a solid foundation to set the kiddos up for options in life. As someone with a BS in Biology & MS in Lab Sciences, all of the physics & calculus I did take in HS/college has helped me...zero...social skills seem to be falling more & more towards "social media skills" vs. human to human skills...

Aloha🌺I have been homeschooling my 9 year old grandson for 2 years now and I feel as though I don't have a sense of direction. His reading is pretty high (no problem reading at all and can even read Spanish even though he doesn't know what it means). I have not been consistent so I feel lost. I want to know what level he is in before starting this school year. How do I test him to see where he is at to get the appropriate level for this coming school year? I know there are lots of informations out there but I get overwhelmed by it and paralyze myself. Any information is greatly appreciated.

Mom of four here (graduated two, two to go). Just wanted to say that you are absolutely correct when it comes to math! We had our high schoolers take Alg 1, Geometry, and then Personal Finance (Dave Ramsey’s online course for homeschoolers). During their senior year, they didn’t have any math. And guess what? They’re both fully financially dependable with zero debt. They paid cash for their cars, don’t have credit cards, and have never missed a cell phone, insurance, or any other bill payment! They have full time jobs and serve heavily in different ministries at church. ❤

I’m sure you have heard of Critical Thinking Company, but last night I was really taking a deep dive through their website and they have so many more resources than I realized, especially when it comes to the area of critically evaluating information. They have a book called You Decide that goes through the first 8 amendments and takes a look at actual Supreme Court cases and how they interpreted and applied the constitution and asks students to consider whether they would have come to the same conclusions. I’m thinking of buying to talk through together with my 5th and 7th grader.

My husband and I made the decision to include our children when we have our personal financial conversations. They help me make a weekly meal plan with a budget and shop. When they get older we will include them in our monthly bills and income discussions. I think the more we expose them to real finance the better. I also think that teaching my children about delayed gratification is a key component in buying only what you can afford.

Hi there! New home school mom here. I just came across your videos and they are so helpful and you seem very down to earth. I am going to be homeschooling my 5.5 year old this year. The compulsory age for school isn’t until fall of next year but I want to get my feet wet so I am not incredibly overwhelmed the following year, as I have no educational background and don’t really know what I am doing. 😅 My state has strict regulations.I must say i have experienced a roller coaster of emotions over the last few days looking for a curriculum. I get excited saying “I can do this!”Then i getoverwhelmed lol. I think i will settle on Abeka k5 for now as I have heard great things about it. And i need something structured and sound until i get the swing of things. And i want something solid for my boy. Hopefully my son likes it, as he is very active and mainly wants to play.
